“Dear One, I know that you are suffering. That is why I am here for you.” These words of Thich Nhat Hanh are taken from his book “True Love – A Practice for Awakening the Heart.” This is a mantra which we can speak from the heart to manifest our true presence for the other.
When I read these words again this morning, I was deeply touched in my heart. I really know the truth of this. I know what an amazing gift it is whenever anyone speaks from a deep place and says – I am here for you. What can I do for you? It feels to me like the ultimate gift. A true declaration of love that transcends all actions, promises and intentions. It’s like a complete baring of the soul.
We often make expressing and being love far too complicated and get lost in the mind and its distracting thoughts about what this should look like. Love has never had any monetary value and could never be expressed as an outward show of doing things for others. Sometimes the most powerful way of being there is simply to sit quietly and give the other our full attention. Our heart. And just be there completely. Emptied out of thoughts and expectations. Softened and open. Giving everything we are to the other. No words needed.
And this is something we can also do at a distance, even if the loved one is not physically present. We can fully connect with another’s heart right here, right now.
I feel strongly drawn to staying fully present in my declaration of love for the apparent other. Love is here now. Present. With us.
