Another Beautiful Sunset – Life’s Happening While I’m at my Computer

Oh my! Just about half an hour ago I happened to look up from my computer screen and saw a beautiful sky. I leapt to my feet and grabbed the camera. This is what I saw. Sunsets are so amazing. The colours, akin to silk painting and watercolour technique, look as if someone had picked some incredible shades from their palette and spread them with a large, soft brush across the sky. I slowly went back to what I had … Continue reading

A Splash of Colour Therapy – Silk, Dyes and Fun

I spent the last two days working on another couple of commissioned silk scarves and found myself really enjoying working with the vibrant colours. I was just thinking a few days ago how nice it would be to have my two different rainbow scarves side by side, when suddenly I got an order for one of each. Such a beautiful synchronicity. So I set about painting them in tandem, with the two frames set up at the same time, enjoying … Continue reading

A Touch of Frost on the Cosmic Web

A few weeks ago I was inspired to start up a new spiritually based group for artisans on the Etsy website. Together with Star Breiter, my Silk and Stars partner, we opened the group and started to put out the call for other like-minded people. – as you read through this post, click on the photos to be taken to the artists’ pages. The group has a team presence on Etsy but also a day-to-day support on Facebook and the … Continue reading

Vibrant, Fabulous Colour- Playing with Silk, Dyes and Salt

I had just taken my latest silks out of the vinegar solution I normally soak them in before starting my work on them and started to stretch them on my frames. I began to tune in to which colours I would be mixing together…. the first one was going to be a real earthy mix as it was for a client who had ordered a SilkandStars package. Intuitively it felt right for them to be having some purple blended in … Continue reading

A Day in the Life….Creating Small Framed Silk Pictures

Most of you know my freehand silk mandalas that I love creating. Whenever I’m asked about templates, I always tell you that I almost never use them and enjoy the process of freely creating as I go. But there are a few items that I use templates for and those are the smaller items that I reproduce as variations on a theme. I just wanted to share an insight into my small framed silk pictures, items that I do indeed … Continue reading

Silk Painting, Stars and Batik with Soya Wax

One of my current loves is creating designs on my silks using soya wax as a resist. I sometimes use brushes to apply the wax but mostly play around with the tjantings I have. This silk painting technique is a form of batik. I normally apply a few layers of dye to the silk after each wax patterning. And today was no exception. Recently I had painted a very pale, pastelly star pattern on a silk scarf and only today … Continue reading

Silk Painting with Scarves, Mandalas and Gemstones

I just love synchronicities and I love how they occur at the least expected moments. Recently I began exploring the world of gemstones starting off with a lovely green semi-precious stone in my collection. It was a mixture of chrysocolla and malachite. Well I went on to create a lovely silk which I now offer in my Etsy shop as made to order. This is it here. I was then sent a few photographs by my gemologer friend Starlene Breiter … Continue reading

Silk Painting: Refilling Gold Liner from the Tubes to the Bottles

We all have our habits and one of mine in silk painting is always to use the little plastic bottles with nibs for drawing my resist lines. I’ve never liked the tubes. It’s just one of those things. But a few days ago I realised I was going to have to order some more gold resist as I have a silk painting workshop coming up and saw that I didn’t have enough for the participants. So I went online and … Continue reading

Silk Painting with Fiona Stolze – Using Premade Cushion Covers

Although I love to paint my cushion covers from scratch by making a silk satin front panel and sewing a dupioni zipped back panel, it is good to be able to use the premade cushion covers in between. Just last week I decided to play with one. One word before I start. There are 3 different types of silk covers available. One is made of pongee and the others of crepe or crepe satin. I only use the satin as … Continue reading
