Silk Painting with Gold Accents

I’ve been painting on silk for around 18 years now. My goodness – where does the time go? And yes, in that time I have covered a lot of ground. I’ve tried out lots of different techniques, and some of my experiments have ended up in the trash leaving me with a good-humoured sense of “Next!”. At quite an early point I began to create mandalas using gold liner as a resist and losing myself in lots of tiny details. … Continue reading

The Classical Seven-Course Labyrinth on Silk

I’ve been painting some more bright, silky labyrinths and wanted to share the results with you. The one in these images is the classical seven-course labyrinth, which is constructed from 7 concentric circles around the centre point. There’s an amazingly simple geometry behind this design which I may share with you in another post. It was fun to learn how to draw one free-hand although I did use a template to create these silky images. A labyrinth is not the … Continue reading

Chakra Silk Paintings on a Snowy Sunday Afternoon

It’s a very snowy April afternoon, and it also happens to be a Sunday. So I thought – what better way to spend it than to start posting the recent photos I took of my chakra (energy centre) silk paintings. I’m going to share some of the photos of the process of creating them so you can see how they came about. And I will be sharing some information about the chakras in some posts to come. Watch this space. … Continue reading

New Silk Painting and Tie-Dyeing Supplies

Today we visited a store here in Edmonton that actually had some supplies I was able to buy and will be able to use in the very near future. I’ve now got various bits and pieces that will enable me to both tie-dye and do some silk painting. I was especially pleased to be able to get hold of a tjanting, one of those sweet little Indonesian devices that is used to apply wax to the fabric when creating batik. … Continue reading

Silk Painting – Getting the Creative Urge Again

It’s been a very long time since I did some silk painting. In fact, too long.  Just far too long. Life just sometimes comes and leads you in a completely different direction. And then you get that urge again… I was just looking through my thousands of photos of my silk painting adventures. This picture below shows my old dye cupboard in our Victorian town house from many moons ago.   The photo below this is one that some of … Continue reading

Massive Clearout of my Silkandart Online Shops

For many years I have sold a multitude of items in my online silk shops but this August I will be stopping selling most of them and bringing a complete focus to a small range of pure silks. By that I mean the scarves, wraps, altar cloths, silk bags, silk panels, etc. All the other items are now being permanently phased out. These include small framed pictures, all types of supplies, mandala pocket mirrors, cushion/pillow covers, ties,  window pictures, painted … Continue reading

Another Beautiful Sunset – Life’s Happening While I’m at my Computer

Oh my! Just about half an hour ago I happened to look up from my computer screen and saw a beautiful sky. I leapt to my feet and grabbed the camera. This is what I saw. Sunsets are so amazing. The colours, akin to silk painting and watercolour technique, look as if someone had picked some incredible shades from their palette and spread them with a large, soft brush across the sky. I slowly went back to what I had … Continue reading

A Splash of Colour Therapy – Silk, Dyes and Fun

I spent the last two days working on another couple of commissioned silk scarves and found myself really enjoying working with the vibrant colours. I was just thinking a few days ago how nice it would be to have my two different rainbow scarves side by side, when suddenly I got an order for one of each. Such a beautiful synchronicity. So I set about painting them in tandem, with the two frames set up at the same time, enjoying … Continue reading

A Touch of Frost on the Cosmic Web

A few weeks ago I was inspired to start up a new spiritually based group for artisans on the Etsy website. Together with Star Breiter, my Silk and Stars partner, we opened the group and started to put out the call for other like-minded people. – as you read through this post, click on the photos to be taken to the artists’ pages. The group has a team presence on Etsy but also a day-to-day support on Facebook and the … Continue reading

Vibrant, Fabulous Colour- Playing with Silk, Dyes and Salt

I had just taken my latest silks out of the vinegar solution I normally soak them in before starting my work on them and started to stretch them on my frames. I began to tune in to which colours I would be mixing together…. the first one was going to be a real earthy mix as it was for a client who had ordered a SilkandStars package. Intuitively it felt right for them to be having some purple blended in … Continue reading
