Silk Painting – Getting the Creative Urge Again

It’s been a very long time since I did some silk painting. In fact, too long.  Just far too long. Life just sometimes comes and leads you in a completely different direction. And then you get that urge again… I was just looking through my thousands of photos of my silk painting adventures. This picture below shows my old dye cupboard in our Victorian town house from many moons ago.   The photo below this is one that some of … Continue reading

Taking my Silks out of the Silk Steamer

The whole process of painting on silk is an amazing meditation but there’s always a really magical moment when I lift the package with my silks out of the steamer after they’ve been hanging in there for 3 hours. I roll them up beforehand in paper around a long pole and suspend that in a long horizontal metal steamer with water in the bottom.  Then I set the thermostat and  let them cook for 3 hours in their beauty sauna. … Continue reading

Buying Silk Painting Supplies at Low Cost

I recently posted an article about how to do silk painting on a shoe-string budget and not long after that a friend asked for some help on how cheap this whole thing can be. Well, I had a look into this and came to the conclusion that you really can do it for very little money if you are prepared to just start with the absolute basics and not invest in lots of fancy equipment. Why spend a lot if … Continue reading

Revamp a Silk Scarf and Give it a New Lease of Life

I was just wondering if you have any silk scarves lying around at home that you attempted to dye and just weren’t happy with. Or maybe you’ve put some dye on them and they’re become a little faded. Well, I just wanted to let you know what I’ve been doing to one of my scarves. I’ve revamped it, given it a fabulous new lease of life. And it looks really snazzy. So how did I do it? I simply added … Continue reading

How to Create a Beautiful Designer Silk Scarf Using Your Microwave

That’s quite an odd title coming from me, isn’t it? If you’ve been following a lot of my writing here and on other sites, you’ll know that I’m a real believer in good quality steaming for silk painting. But….in view of the fact that not everyone has the time, space and funds for this whole process, I thought I would share with you some of my escapades with microwaving. So here’s how I’ve been doing it. The first problem I … Continue reading

Silk Painting with Om and Soya Wax Part 1

Yes, I’m painting with soya wax on silk again because I had such fun the first time I tried it a couple of weeks ago. And this time I thought I would try using a template I had instead of just drawing the pattern free-hand like I did last time. As I write the wax is still hardening properly and so I’ve decided to document what I’ve done so far. I began by stretching a piece of silk on the … Continue reading

What’s Better – Silk Paint or Silk Dye?

The bottom line here is that there is no right or wrong answer. It’s important for you to know the difference between the two and then be able to make your own decision on which to use. I’m sure you’ve heard that only the professionals use the silk dyes and the beginners use the paints. Well, that’s no really true. There are many so-called professionals who heat-fix their paints on silk, just as there are many starting out who prefer … Continue reading

Art For Art's Sake….Or Is It Just Another Job?

Last night I just completed one of my latest artistic creations. I had painted a premade silk top in varying shades of pink and fuchsia and then applied some gold patterning to the front in gutta for special effect. I then sewed it together, ironed the seams and put it on in front of the mirror. I was really thrilled with the final result, mainly because it was in my favourite colours and because it was a great fit. My … Continue reading
