Silk Mandala Painting – starting to get creative again

It’s amazing how that creative urge just keeps on pushing its way back up to the surface no matter what other things I am doing. And since I don’t have the supplies that I used to, it lets me look at working with what is at hand, despite having grandiose ideas about how things should look. What a great analogy for life and being present to what is. I got hold of some small square canvases and created some silk … Continue reading

A Splash of Colour Therapy – Silk, Dyes and Fun

I spent the last two days working on another couple of commissioned silk scarves and found myself really enjoying working with the vibrant colours. I was just thinking a few days ago how nice it would be to have my two different rainbow scarves side by side, when suddenly I got an order for one of each. Such a beautiful synchronicity. So I set about painting them in tandem, with the two frames set up at the same time, enjoying … Continue reading

Mayan Gold on Silk Inspired by the Da Vinci Code Soundtrack

Over the years I have painted a great number of mandalas on silk and, as you can imagine, I have a huge collection of photographs taken both during the process and afterwards of the completed paintings. And it’s with great joy that I often browse through the photos, picking pictures out here and there to illustrate writings and newsletters. Well the latest trip down memory lane was yesterday when I pulled out my Da Vinci Code soundtrack CD and suddenly … Continue reading

Art for Art’s Sake…

I have always encouraged others to allow free expression of their artistic tendencies at all times. I see it as coming from somewhere deep within. Somewhere we normally don’t have access to. And to deny it’s free flow and emergence is like cutting off our life flow. Today I was sitting browsing online and saw the work of some truly amazing artists. There were some pieces which deeply touched me and I literally held my breath. It is so inspiring … Continue reading

New Mantangle Silk Painting Challenge: July – August 2012

It’s that time again and here we are, ready to take on our next challenge. But first of all, huge gratitude to all those of you who took part in the first Mantangles silk painting challenge. I’m not going to go into all the details of how this started. Suffice to say that I documented it all in some earlier posts, and so I’d love you to go and read up and see where all of this came from. So … Continue reading

Silk Painting – How to Use a Tjanting with Soya Wax as a Resist

A tjanting is this amazing little tool you can see in the photo below and it is used traditionally in Indonesia to create beautiful patterns on fabric using melted wax. Some of you will know that I treated myself to a tjanting a few weeks ago after eyeing them for a while. And the bottom line is that I’m so glad I did as I love it! So I’m going to share with you how I went about using it … Continue reading

Mandala Paintings, Silk & Art and Tallaght Library, Dublin

Just a couple of days ago I was browsing through my thousands of digital photos from the past few years and came across a handful I had of an exhibition I did in Tallaght Library in Dublin in 2009. It was one of those spontaneous, last minute things. A few days before the Easter holidays were due to start. And someone who had been scheduled to exhibit their artwork for 3 weeks had withdrawn. So they were looking for someone … Continue reading

Acrylic Canvas Paintings versus Silk Painting

It’s true that many of you know me for my silk art work, my mandalas in particular. But I sometimes just like to go wild and cover a canvas with acrylic paint as a real physical exercise. I decided to share my acrylics and oils with you on video as they don’t get seen very often. So here is the first one I have captured on video: I painted it in 2008 while we still lived in Ireland  and I … Continue reading

Meet my Latest Mandala Silk Painting – Om Mani Padme Hum

This evening I just completed my latest mandala painting. I actually started work on it many months ago but stopped about half way through and just waited until the inspiration came to continue. It’s often that way with my artwork. I only start to paint when I feel moved to do so. It’s a spiritual journey exploring the divine through colour and shape. And when I do, I love to get my studio all cosy. First of all I select … Continue reading

Painting Mandalas on Silk in Bristol

I had actually been planning to have some people in for silk painting way back in February but the day before the flu broke out in our household and those of you following my 30 day video challenge will know that it took quite a while for it to do its work and move on. I do believe that everything happens for a reason and in perfect timing. Our group shrank quite a bit as a result of the date … Continue reading
