Hanging Art on Your Walls Can Increase Your Happiness

Have you found that hanging art work, whether your own or others’, has a positive effect on your brain activity and happiness? I don’t know about you, but I get really excited seeing artwork. I enjoy the colours, the shapes, the movement, the textures…. It is really exciting. I can feel it in my whole body. Being an artist I tend to have a lot of paintings in my home. My husband is always encouraging me to just hang it … Continue reading

New Horizons – Art as an Expression of (Wo)Man’s Indomitable Spirit

I love how we, as humans, have the capacity to tap into that wild, raw, primal energy of a stormy sea when confronted with seemingly insurmountable challenges. It’s as if we adjust the sat nav for distant, unknown shores and set sail, regardless of the outcome. We take on an almost unforgiving movement, striving relentlessly towards distant horizons. The salty spray, our breath, leaping high in the air as we lunge forwards, drawn magnetically by the gravitational pull of the … Continue reading

Creating Art in the Coldest Spot on the Planet

We’ve just come out of a really cold snap – one that has had Edmonton ranked as the coldest spot on the planet with temperatures¬†below -40 Celcius with real feel a few degrees below that too. It has been quite a challenge, but ideal for ramping up the heating and get creative indoors. Here are a few photos I took during this time. This first one was the view through the window in our front porch. I really love the … Continue reading

Meet Kathleen Miller and ‘Harbor Moon’: Minimalistic Abstract in Oils

I’d love you to meet artist Kathleen Miller from Rockport, MA who creates vibrant, colourful artwork using oils, brushes and her palette knife. For just under two years now she has been running a gallery together with her partner in Rockport where they often exhibit work by other local artists. I recently put out the call on my Facebook Page for artists who paint with oils, acrylics, watercolours – anything but silk, to submit their favourite painting to me and … Continue reading

Opposing Elements – Fire and Water in Acrylic

I was recently drawn to play with acrylic paints again and so I got out a couple of canvases and squeezed a few spirals of paints onto a board to get ready. Painting with acrylics is no different from painting on silk in the sense that I have no real idea of what will emerge in the process. It was so lovely to get really physical, using my selection of palette knives to plaster the paints onto the canvas rhythmically. … Continue reading

The Acrylic Part of Silk & Art

Before many of you got to know me I was busy painting a lot with acrylics as well as the silks. Because I never really shared these paintings publicly, no-one knew that I had created them. So I decided that it is is time to bring them right out into the open and to put them into my online shops along with the silks and really breathe life into them. This first one I’m showcasing here on my blog is … Continue reading

Friday Art Share: Spotlight on Ingrid Lee

I’m thrilled to bring you the first of a new series of artist interviews that I’m going to be sharing with you fortnightly on this site. Last week I started a new project called Friday Art Share, asking you to share a link to your website at the end of my blog post. I then took all of those who entered and put them in a hat. Ingrid Lee’s name came out and she is the first artist I have … Continue reading
