Magic in the Setting Sun

There’s just something magical about the setting sun. I wrote recently in a post about that moment when the last firey rays light up the horizon. But when I stepped outside a couple of days ago to photograph the setting sun again, something quite extraordinary happened. I pointed the camera in the direction of the sun and just as I took the photo, there was a sudden flash as the light momentarily blinded me. I had a feeling that the … Continue reading

Watching the Day Coming to a Close

I was scurrying around, seeing to many small jobs and generally tidying up and creating space. We moved house not so long ago and we spend a portion of each day, seeing to things that really need seeing to. There’s still a lot to tend to. And I was just thinking about how much we had actually shifted. How much we had cleared out to make space for what was to stay. I was walking down the path to the … Continue reading

Getting Up Again After We Fall

I was thinking about how easy it is to fall. In a spiritual sense. Saying how things are and then tripping over the next hidden obstacle without any warning. I see so clearly how important it is to have my thoughts, words and actions in alignment with the Deepest within. And yet sometimes there’s a loud crash and I’ve fallen face first into the next quagmire. But I can see the full reflection the moment it happens. It’s that moment … Continue reading

Meet Kathleen Miller and ‘Harbor Moon’: Minimalistic Abstract in Oils

I’d love you to meet artist Kathleen Miller from Rockport, MA who creates vibrant, colourful artwork using oils, brushes and her palette knife. For just under two years now she has been running a gallery together with her partner in Rockport where they often exhibit work by other local artists. I recently put out the call on my Facebook Page for artists who paint with oils, acrylics, watercolours – anything but silk, to submit their favourite painting to me and … Continue reading

Synthesis – the Coming Together of All the Parts

Sitting here as the night comes on, I felt the urge to draw a card and share it with you. This is what came: SYNTHESIS. You can almost hear the clicking as all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle suddenly start to fit together in the most unexpected ways. You’ve lost the box with the picture on it and have to just start fitting the pieces together, allowing the design to emerge. It feels right now. You know it’s right. … Continue reading

The Sands of Time were Eroded by the River of Constant Change

I was 16 and was lying in bed  listening to Steve Wright’s Radio Forth late night show. He unexpectedly played a piece I hadn’t heard before by a group called Genesis. Within seconds I sat up and was attentive. This was so different from anything I had ever heard before. A piece called ‘Firth of Fifth’ ( a nice synchronicity with the Firth of Forth where I lived) from their album ‘Selling England by the Pound’. It went so deep. … Continue reading

Getting a Spiritual Hair Cut

It struck me as quite funny how surrendering to divine will can be a bit like getting a hair cut. You suddenly have a flash of inspiration and decide to have a really radical haircut, so different from what you currently have, it’s like night and day. But then the mind kicks in and you end up only having an inch or two snipped. After a short while you realise that more needs to go and so off you go … Continue reading

Taking Full Responsiblity for Your Life

I love taking the opportunity to look honestly at my experiences and see what is really below the surface. Not get stuck in what is happening but see what the ‘message’ is, what I know is true underneath it all. I used to always believe that what was happening was a direct measure of how much goodness or badness was flowing to me in my life. And so when I was having negative experiences despite having been calmed inside and … Continue reading

A Portrait of Womanness

I always said I don’t paint people. No portraits, faces, nothing. Only abstract designs and mandalas. But over the past week or so I have found myself drawn more and more to create a woman on canvas using my acrylics. And today I couldn’t resist. I went up into my attic and pulled out my paints. Without any visual references. Just painting. As it comes. From the heart. I used to be ashamed of my portraits and people drawings back … Continue reading

Opposing Elements – Fire and Water in Acrylic

I was recently drawn to play with acrylic paints again and so I got out a couple of canvases and squeezed a few spirals of paints onto a board to get ready. Painting with acrylics is no different from painting on silk in the sense that I have no real idea of what will emerge in the process. It was so lovely to get really physical, using my selection of palette knives to plaster the paints onto the canvas rhythmically. … Continue reading
