Thank you for coming on board and breathing life into this project again with me. I’m excited to share this first challenge for our Facebook group and see what emerges.
Lakshmi and I sat down and had a good long think about what we could get started with. Here she is supporting me in the meditation. That’s quite a process in itself.
This isn’t about creating something pretty that you will sit back and say – ‘Sweet!’ to. I remember how I set the very first challenge for the original group that started years ago. Even though I put the brief together, I so struggled with what was being asked of me. However, I persevered, as did everyone else, and I was surprised at what emerged.
This time, after a bit, an idea began to gel. I came up with an idea that I thought would create enough challenge for you to paint or draw something quite a bit different from what you would usually do.
So, here is the brief: you can use any medium or mix of media that you like but the finished piece has to be at least 40cm x 40cm (16″ x 16″). That’s about 2 handspans wide. I’d like you first of all to sit down and reflect on something that currently really triggers you (not a fun or light-hearted thing). Write down what comes to mind first. It could be smoke, gossip, marshmallows, unkindness, lies, over-protective people, or anything else. At this point you might be telling yourself that you don’t have any triggers and that this challenge isn’t for you after all. That’s all right. Just keep going. You’re completely on track. Triggers can be a bit tricky and have a way of subtly hiding themselves, only to emerge when we least expect it. Dig a bit deeper until you have something.
Okay. You have your trigger. I want you to decide right now what medium/media you are going to use and share these two pieces of information with us all in the group in the thread with this brief. Write them in the thread in the Facebook Group.
An example: screetching noises – chalks and black paper
Done that? Right. So far, so good. Now I want you to go get your paints, crayons, dyes, chalks, coloured pencils, etc. and write your trigger in the middle of your canvas, sheet of paper, silk, or whatever you are working with.
Next, take a photo of your word on your canvas and post it in the group for us all to see. I will create a new thread for you all to share these photos in. This will establish a starting point for us to progress from.
And from here I want you to start creating your art around the word. The only condition is that your word is clearly visible at the end of the process. Whatever you do with it is up to you.
I would love for everyone taking part (either actively or giving moral support) to respond to the posts. Share your thoughts, make suggestions if asked for. This way it becomes really interactive.
We will have 21 days to create our pieces so on February 10th, the challenge will close. On that date we will all share a photo of our finished piece.
From there I will gather them and make a presentation which we can begin to share around.
I look forward to being part of this and sharing in what you are all creating. Let the fun begin! 🙂
P.S.: If you are reading this post and have no idea what we are talking about, please consider joining us. Send me a message and let me know if you are interested. All our work will take place on Facebook. Thanks! 🙂
