Painting Mandalas on Canvas

As I continue to hone my video editing skills for my silk art online classes, I am enjoying creating mandala art time lapses and posting them on my YouTube channel. I have been painting these designs on silk for 2 decades and never got round to videoing me making them. So it has been an absolute delight to capture these moments as I create mandalas on canvas. The time lapse allows you to watch the whole process in a very … Continue reading

Hanging Art on Your Walls Can Increase Your Happiness

Have you found that hanging art work, whether your own or others’, has a positive effect on your brain activity and happiness? I don’t know about you, but I get really excited seeing artwork. I enjoy the colours, the shapes, the movement, the textures…. It is really exciting. I can feel it in my whole body. Being an artist I tend to have a lot of paintings in my home. New Horizons – Art as an Expression of (Wo)Man’s Indomitable Spirit

I love how we, as humans, have the capacity to tap into that wild, raw, primal energy of a stormy sea when confronted with seemingly insurmountable challenges. It’s as if we adjust the sat nav for distant, unknown shores and set sail, regardless of the outcome. We take on an almost unforgiving movement, striving relentlessly towards distant horizons. The salty spray, our breath, leaping high in the air as we lunge forwards, drawn magnetically by the gravitational pull of the … Continue reading

Creating Art in the Coldest Spot on the Planet

We’ve just come out of a really cold snap – one that has had Edmonton ranked as the coldest spot on the planet with temperatures¬†below -40 Celcius with real feel a few degrees below that too. It has been quite a challenge, but ideal for ramping up the heating and get creative indoors. Here are a few photos I took during this time. This first one was the view through the window in our front porch. I really love the … Continue reading

A Portrait of Womanness

I always said I don’t paint people. No portraits, faces, nothing. Only abstract designs and mandalas. But over the past week or so I have found myself drawn more and more to create a woman on canvas using my acrylics. And today I couldn’t resist. I went up into my attic and pulled out my paints. Without any visual references. Just painting. As it comes. From the heart. I used to be ashamed of my portraits and people drawings back … Continue reading

Opposing Elements – Fire and Water in Acrylic

I was recently drawn to play with acrylic paints again and so I got out a couple of canvases and squeezed a few spirals of paints onto a board to get ready. Painting with acrylics is no different from painting on silk in the sense that I have no real idea of what will emerge in the process. It was so lovely to get really physical, using my selection of palette knives to plaster the paints onto the canvas rhythmically. … Continue reading
