Can Colour Therapy Positively Affect the Chakras?

It’s been many years now since I completed my colour therapy training but all in all, colour was always a huge part of my life.

In a way, doing the training was just formalising what I wanted to do, allowing me to take the certificate and get out there to share what I had learned with others.

I can remember much earlier reading about how ancient cultures used their amazing knowledge of the healing properties of the various colours to maintain balance and good health amongst their people. The Atlanteans and ancient Egyptians harnessed the energy of different coloured crystals to incredible effect in their light temples.

There has been so much pioneering work done over the years to explore how light and colour can help to alleviate many of our modern-day ailments.  Of all the electro-magnetic rays coming down onto our planet from the cosmos, only a small portion of these are visible to our eyes as the colours we know.

Red (with infra-red just beyond it) is at the lower end and vibrates at the lowest frequency in our visible colour spectrum. Purple, which vibrates at a high frequency, is at the other end just before ultra-violet.

Although all the colours from red to purple are beautiful to look at, they are simply translations of energy frequencies which have a direct effect on our minds and bodies whether or not we know it.

So when we feel alive and bouncy in red, it is not the colour in itself that has brought about this state. It is the vibration inherent within it that is causing the energetic change.

We have long known that different colours are responsible for enhancing or depressing our mood. And they are very effectively implemented in colour therapy in activating our chakras or energy centres in our bodies. Seven main centres are identified in Eastern teachings and for those of you unfamiliar with them, here is a brief summary:

  1. Base chakra – linked with RED
  2. Sacral chakra – linked with ORANGE
  3. Solar plexus chakra – linked with YELLOW
  4. Heart chakra – linked with GREEN and PINK
  5. Throat chakra – linked with BLUE
  6. Third eye chakra – linked with INDIGO
  7. Crown chakra – linked with AMETHYST or WHITE

When these different areas in our body (or energy field) become affected by stress and are less activated than normal (or sometimes over-activated), colour can play a huge part in bringing them into equilibrium and vibrating at the right frequency again.

A very effective way of doing this is by wearing a silk scarf in the colour in question. Here is a video I made talking about activating the throat chakra.

There are many remedies that can be applied within this context and looking at each individual person’s life situation throws light on what is the most appropriate way of doing it.

The changes that occur are subtle and permeate all areas of your life. This results in your energy field vibrating at a different frequency and consequently you will start to attract different experiences into your life to match this.

Why not start today becoming much more conscious of the colours in your surroundings and look at how they might be affecting you. Remember, it’s all energy and we can choose what we surround ourselves with.

Hi Fiona, now I know why my life has always been ruled by colours :). Why I had the urge every winter to buy colourful bits and pieces and how I smiled every time I looked at them. Thanks for explaining!

You’re welcome Judy. Isn’t it uplifting to absorb bright colours in the winter months. Glad this was of some help. Thanks for commenting.

  4. Hi Fiona,
this was very interesting and inspiring to read. I should look into this a little closer. You know I play with color every single day and I had learned the chakras and their colours some time ago -but I had this information hidden somewhere in the back of my mind. Thank you for unveiling it again,
